Graduating in 1988 with a degree in Philosophy and Writing, White stayed in Atlanta through the fall, working as a bartender at Fat Tuesday's and studying acting through an apprentice fellowship program at The Academy Theatre. In 1989, he began his post-baccalaureate studies in Filmmaking at the University of South Florida. There he developed his interest in experimental filmmaking and in 1992, earned his Master's degree in Filmmaking at the prestigious The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His mentors included Philip Hoffman, Stephanie Maxwell, Lynne Sachs, Sharon Couzin, and Shellie Fleming.
In 1993 White resurrected the Onion City Film Festival in Chicago and served as its Executive Director and Programmer until 1999.
